Scene Module

     Week 1:

My plan for today is to find different  creative and media events in the local area and to collect resources from a number of sources.

I needed to find out local events as well so i looked though local 'What's on Guides' and in local newspapers and websites and i analysed (IE4) these as to why these colours, fonts etc were used and went into depth about why the event is advertised in that way. In order to find out these things i collected many paper and virtual sources i found in newspapers, leaflets brochures, catalogs and websites. (IE2)

(RL1)(RL2)(RL5)A strength of mine this week was my ability to use my initiative to find things that weren't just easily accessible off the internet.
A weakness, and target for improvement is to look for different events on a wider range as alot of the results i got were on the same subject such as acting, costume making, art galleries and so on.
A skill I've learnt this week is how to search for jobs on the internet

     Week 2

The plan for today is to find jobs in our local area including London.

The jobs had to be to do with Creative and Media, so i went on the internet and started job hunting. I went on specific job websites and also searched for individual unique jobs, like circus acts etc.. I also used newspaper clipping from my 'The Stage' newspaper which is targeted at creative and media news. With all the jobs I found I then analysed them, finding the salary, qualifications needed and any other information. (IE2)

(RL1)(RL2)(RL5)A strength of mine today was being independent enough to look in a creative and media newspaper to look
a weakness was spending a long time trying to look for jobs off the internet when the results i were getting weren't very varied or in the local area.

The History of Home Video

(STAGE 2 - RESEARCH)

Home Videos have been around for the whole of my life and I am now surrounded by home videos all the the time. We have seen them evolve from extremely wealthy being able to buy and use them to anyone with a digital camera or mobile phone!

<- This is the first ever camera that took still images. It was created in 1814 by Joseph Niepce in Paris, France. However, talk of caeras had been around since the 5th and 4th centuries when Chinese and Greek philosophers discorverd the basic principles of optics and the camera. This camera is called a Camera Obscura. The fault with this was that it took 8 hours of light exposure to show and took little time to fade away again.
From then on the camera developed, adapted and was able to create film.

It is very hard to say when the first ever home video was made because it depends what people count as movies. For instance, are a series of pictures regarded as a movie?
Roughly however, the first home video ever made was in 1888 and it was called 'Roundhay Garden Scene' it was only 3 seconds long though. It was filmed by Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince using the Le Prince single-lens camera which was made in the same year (1888). It was taken in the garden of the Whitley family house in Oakwood Grange Road, Roundhay, a suburb of Leeds, Yorkshire, Great Britain. It is said to have been filmed on October 14, 1888. In the film Adolphe Le Prince (Le Prince's son), Mrs. Sarah Whitley, (Le Prince's mother-in-law), Joseph Whitley and Miss Harriet Hartley can be seen walking across the garden. These family and friends are shown walking around in circles, laughing to themselves. It only includes 4 frames.

Number 1

The creation of motion picture cameras and projectors in the 1880s created a brand new audience to join in with home movie making. It lured in wealthy individuals with the financial backup to go out and purchase a home movie camera of their own. A lot of old films were actually made out of highly flammable material called nitrate. So unfortunately, we have lost a lot of the old silent films due to their flammability.

A more successful camera leading on from Le Princes' 16mm film created in the 1920's by Eastman Kodak. With these growing more and more popular, manufacturers latched onto this industry and created more. To prevent the nitrate being used the new film was created on a celluloid base. It was still the case however that only the rich and privileged could buy this breakthrough technology. This fact exapanded the idea into experimenting with less expensive film formats and material so they could create mass' more. These films were still only being created by the rich though and for own personal use.

This is the first successful camera of 1924 by the company Leica.

This later expanded to the introduction of 8mm film in the early 1930s. After finding out how the 16mm wasn't cost efficient they thought of this 8mm film which was less expensive and easier to use. In the 1930s more developments were taking place. Audio was able to be recorded seperately which many people couldn't afford to do and colour film was created. This is the stage when it formed the whole skeleton of all modern cameras now where they have colour images with audio attached so the exact real life situation can be kept and re lived again and again.

You can tell that cameras were just going from strength to strength when videos like this were taken. >

However, to take something with this high quality would cost more than any average family would be willing to spend.

^ This is a video that was captured in the 1950's on 8mm film. With the advanced technology we have now which wasn't available in the 50's is the ability to convert this into a video able to play on the computer. This was found on Youtube.com (More details about Youtube.com later). As you can tell, audio still wasn't readily available to most people at this time

For the next few decades, both 8mm and 16mm film formats were used to make home movies. Most people who were ameuters at filming preffered the 8mm film for more convienence but the professional videographers went for the 16mm for the bigger image. Home movie making continued its ongoing increase in popularity. In 1965 though, a new format called Super 8 was launched. Unlike the previous designs, which required manual loading, this new design had it done automatically. Super 8 film was easier to use and affordable to everyone. It helped people recognise the home movie technology and gave alternatives to the individuals or families who couldn't afford the 8mm or 16mm. Because of this it meant more and more people from various classes could document events in their life.

To the right is 16mm camera created in 1965 called a H-16 REX-4. It weighs an incoveinent 6lbs! Can film 30 minutes and can film from as far as 100ft.

After the home videos were starting to be used professionaly for TV and Film VHS (Vertical Helican Scan) and Betamax arose in the 1970s. This meant that videos could be put onto this and watched on the home television set and could stand the test of time (or so they thought) The VHS and Betamax tape meant that an even smaller video camera could be used to be used. Further adjustments in technology allowed for longer and longer recording times on the tapes, increasing from 30 minutes to several hours. This is a huge milestone from the first home movies 3 seconds! At this point, the majority of families either owned video cameras or rented them, it wasn't only available to the rich anymore.

2000s and the manufacturers realised even smaller video recorders have to be invented. MiniDV cassettes were created and they offered longer filming time, more visual clarity and lower prices for it. They were also a lot lighter and portable. Suddenly, in 1997 Philippe Kahn invented the camera phone, this wa revolutionary technology which would soon become the centre of most of your lives. The first camera phone was a J-SH04, made by Sharp.
^Here is the J-SH04. the first phone to have a built in camera, it was revolutionary at the time but only available in Korea. if you wanted to buy one of these collectors items now, be willing to pay £1,270. Everyone wants to get their hands on the first ever camera phone.

Soon enough, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and all the ocmapnies we know today wanted in on the idea. Now the image has expanded to over an astounding 10 mega pixels. Some mobiles in Europe has the oppurtunity to become a camera phone. An external camera was create to attach to the phone. However, this idea never really lifted off as it was easier to just get a camera phone. Nowadays, a very small amount can be seen without camera phones. It's very rare to see a teenager not blaring music from there phone and taking pictures.

The last few years of video camera development meant that we can record videos straight to a DVD or cameras built in memory where we can transfer it to the computer or DVD. This has eliminated every step from the 1888 camera where by the film had to manually be fixed in and the numerous image pout together has to be hand developed. No more spontaneous combustion of film strips or heavy equipment. Todays cameras are just creating laziness!

In the last 100 or more years, moving images have become increasingly more affordable, convenient, and readily available through a variety of different technology such as mobile Phones, Ipods or Games consoles. We have the ability and freedom to record our personal life, we can even create our own professional films that could be the same as a Hollywood Movie. With all the software now created to edit the movies we can pretty much do anything we want with it.

From the first camera made by Le Prince and Kodak to Samsung, Sony and Kodak is even still being used today! The new technology being made available give us the ability to create home movies on our own. Anyone can make a home movie and stick it on the Internet for millions of people worldwide to see. The technological industry of the cameras began a huge journey in 1888 to 2010 where we now have YouTube a site where absolutely anyone can put any video on there for the whole world to see. Sch programs as 'You've Been Framed' welcomes these home videos and gives a reward for the embarassing home footage of everyday mistakes and falls.

The advantage in home video equipment is astounding, the cameras themselves have advanced greatly and editing software has been created. People used to have to splice the tape to cut out what you didn't want and stick it to the other part. This was complicated as you had to be careful when sticking not to ruin the tape and you couldn't get fingerprints all over it. Nowadays, we have editing software such as: Microsoft Movie Maker; Apple iMovie; Avid FreeDV; Wax; and Zwei-Stein.
Here are some examples of the latest video cameras:

Number 2

Number 3

Number 4

Number 5

With Number one being created in 1888 it is literally the very bare minimum of a film at that time. But, in that time it was a breakthrough you can see how to the film has changed between this and number two which was created in 1995 on my first christmas. The video quality is very pixelly and not very clear, the image is dark and the colours are dull. This however, is very different compared to the 1888 film in a way that this is actually in colour and stretches to a 56 second film. This could've goen on for longer however. Unfortunately i couldn't find a video between 1888 and 1995 which could have shown a gradual change.
Number 3 is from 1996 on a trip to menorca. The footage is a little brighter from the user being able to use the effects on the camera that come with it. Both, number 2 and 3 were recorded on VHS tape. Number 4 doesn't have a date on it but i would hazard an estimate at 1996 perhaps as the boy in the video is ecstatic over a Nintendo 64 and this is the year it came out. Here, still is the lowered picture quality with viewable pixels on the screen.Lastly, number 5 is very differnent to the last three as if was recorded in 2006 with a digital camera. It s clear that the image is much more clarified and with more vibrant colours. It was transferred to DVD and put onto YouTube.

Record Module

Wednesday 19th May
(STAGE 1 - IDEAS DEVELOPMENT) (IE2)(CT1)

Design Idea 1 -
(Yoga Video)

Purpose = To encourage teenagers to do calming exercises which tone up the body.

<-My idea is to film yoga classes, teaching people how to do easy everyday yoga moves. Where I will guide people through all the yoga poses.

<- I would do it in landscapes like this, giving a calming affect, yoga is all about relaxing so calming music could be used and the strawberry fields could be used as a relaxing location and the beach near it.

This is a yoga routine performed by McPetruk in 1938 He was the teacher of BKS Iyengar and Sri K. Pattahbi Jois, founder the Astanga style of yoga.

Throughout the video the landscapes would change behind me, i may have to do this through green screen if possible. Or i could get a special program where you can make backgrounds. I would have to research it. I would do it on my own and then people from my diploma group would gradually join in. If possible, people from my school could feature in it as well.

It would bring people together and would be an easy excerisise routine for people to participate in who don't like vigorous, tiring excersising. You could even do it watching TV.

Here are various landscapes that could possibly be used and are available near me...

Design Idea 2
(Stop motion video about stopping smoking)

Purpose = To encourage teenagers to sop smoking by showing the dangers in a metaphorical way.
My second idea is to have a stop motion video about teenagers quitting smoking. It would involve various images of smoking killing or perhaps ripping up cigarettes. it would be done in a creative way with various metaphorical elements.

^ The effects used in this to represent the smoke with cotton wool pads and when he threw up string was used. This is a very creative idea and i would like to use the idea of a floating cigarette aswell to add personification to the piece. To animate and inanimate object.

It would be done by taking a picture then moving whatever is featured in the shot then taking a picture again. It would be taken in my house, maybe in a darkish room because this would be a suitable place to show how smoking affects your lifestyle seen as teenagers spend most of their time in the home. It would be shot maybe in the late afternoon when it starts to get dark to show the groggy, dingy feeling.

A possible idea for this would be having a cigarette getting shorter and shorter because it's being used and having a face aging at the same time to make it metaphorical of smoking making you age badly.

I hope to achieve putting across an improtant message about young teenagers in the school smoking. Showing what it can do to you but putting it across in a interesting and original way.

Design Idea 3 (The Life of a Teenage Boy)
Purpose = for entertainment value and real life documentation

It will be a parody of teenage boys where i will dress up as a boy and carry out the general stereotype of 'nerd'. It will be a day in the life of them and follow their experience in a week with parodied, exxagerated situations.

It would be filmed in various locations like in the home, school and park.
It would be in the space of a week like a vlog. The nerd would get into situations where he gets rejected by girls and bullied. it could make people realize how hard a life a 'nerd' goes through. it could possibly teach people that they shouldn't bully people because of the way they look or act. It could be an infromative video that girls can watcht o see how hard a boys life is and for boys to watch to see how some of their bullying can affect people.

Such entertaining scenarios could be:

  • Getting rejected by a girl
  • Losing their glasses
  • In a maths lesson
  • Picking out a library book
  • Watching a dvd
  • What happens when home form school
  • Bedtime routine

Design Idea 4 (Personal Vlog)
Purpose = Documentation

A vlog is a personal documentation of a persons life. It is an insight to a day-to-day life. Many people are into the blogging scene and Youtube.com is the main uploading place for them.

It would be filmed in my home, everyday for maybe a few feeks documenting what i did each day. Much like a journal but a visual one.

After doing research, it seems more interesting to actually include things into the vlog instead of just stating what you did that day. So i could bring a camera round with me and film anything and make it humourous. You can't really plan a video like this so everything would have to be lucky.

Evaluation/Feasibility Study:
(IE1)(IE2)(IE3)(IE4)(IE6)(EP2)

I now have to think through my ideas to see how easy it would be to make them, if it will be effective and how reliable it will be. There are various areas I need to consider befoer i make my final decision such as:

  • Cost - Most of my ideas wouldn't need much purchasing. However, Design idea 2 involves cigarettes which i will have to buy out of my own money and a school budget would not allow this purchase. So for my final design i would have to consider making my own budget.

  • Time - The time would have to fit into my own schedule with school and afterschool/weekend activities. I would also have to fit in with my parents as if i need to be driven somewhere it'll be them who will drive me there. If there are actors in my video such as Design Idea 1, 2 and 3 i would have to make sure there was time when them and i could get together.

  • Equipment - I need to make sure that i have all the right equipment for each idea. For example, in Design Idea 1 i would need to make sure i had appropriate clothing and a yoga mat. For Design idea 2 i would need ot make sure i have a computer software that allows me to put pictures together into a film.

  • Actors - I need to make sure i have a contract form that protects me against any legal issues such as an actor refusing to participate after filming. This would then mean my project wouldn't be able to go on. I also have to male sure the actors in it are up for doing it and they have to be reliable so i know that i can trust them.

  • Transport/Locations - I would need to make sure that the places i visit are either local or there is a form f transport to get me there whether it's walking, driving, train or bus

  • Legality - I need to make sure any music i use has to be within the copyright regulation and must have consent forms for each person in my final film.

  • My own Production skills - From previous diploma module it means that my skills include, design, computer skills and writing skills and personal learning and thinking skills.

  • Editing software - This will be a major part of design idea 1 and 2 definately as i need the right software to achieve my ideas.. I will need to be able to have a program that alllows green screen videos or allows me to change my background on the software and i will need software that allows me to put pictures together that are howed quick enought o create the film.

  • Suitability for audience - As the target audience for this piece will be students from ages 11 - 16 i will need to make sure there are certain boundaries with no offensive laguage, behaviur or visual images.

  • Purpose - For each design idea i will need to consider the purpose throughout the making stages to ensure it is true to it. If it's a entertainment piece then it has to be entertaining not informative. (RL6)

(SM2)(SM3)(EP3)The plan for this module is as follows:
  • 19th May- Decide on final video idea after comparing various other ideas √ - Smoking Film
  • 26th May - Meet a professional filmmaker from Citieye named Antony Bachelor, he will teach us how to make documentaries √ - Made a film about Hair and Beauty in the school
  • 9th June - Plan out the final film idea in detail, create consent forms and contact actors needed √ - I created mindmaps, role on the walls, storyboards and bullet points.
  • 16th June - Put what has been filmed onto computer and edit and review √ - I put the breakfast scene together
  • 23rd June - Put what has been filmed onto computer and edit and review √ - I had some of the 8 second videos which were able to be put on the film
  • 30th June - Put what has been filmed onto computer and edit and review, Meet Mr Bachelor again who taught us advanced editing skills √ - I had more of the 8 second films, and was able to improve the quality through the edit skills
  • 7th July - Put what has been filmed onto computer and edit and review, Meet Mr Bachelor again who taught us advanced editing skills, mostly complete √
  • 14th July - Sharing and evlauating films, Finish films v
Wednesday 26th May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)

Today I plan to meet a professional filmmaker from Citieye named Antony Bachelor, he will teach us how to make documentaries.

Today a professional film maker came to meet with us, he works at a company called Citieye, Click Here to go to the website. He taught us about how to create a documentary which is one of the briefs for our record module. He taught us at what angle camera should be at and how to approach a filmed interview. We were put into groups and had to organise time with people to interview, in my group i contacted 3 male tachers and 3 females to ask if they could do our film. From what Mr Bachelor taught us we knew that the interviewee should be facing a window so the light can hit their face and that the background should be interesting. He also told me that the type of film i was doing (stop motion) was actually called pixelation because i'm using people in my stop motion not inanimate objects.

My group of Sophie White, Sarah and I (TW1) created an interview about hair and beauty in school and whether it's over the top and rules are being broken (CT1) . We added numerous cutaways (EP4) which is where when the interviewee is talking there is a clip of somehting relevant to what their saying over the top. I (TW5) created the questions we would ask people, they were questions(IE1)(CT2)  such as 'Do you feel 11 year olds in year 7 is too young to be wearing makeup?' and 'Are many rules broken to do with hair and beauty?' We created a series of different questions for different groups of people: Male teachers, Female teachers, Year Team Leaders and Students. (CT3)(TW2)(TW4)(EP5)

(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was my ability to listen and learn from what Mr Bachelor was talking about and being able to put it into action with a successful outcome.
A weakness of mine today was not taking into consideration everything he was saying. Some parts i had forgotten to do, like having interviewees at different sides of the shot to look like their talking to eachtoher. A skll i've learnt today is how to create a professional documentary within a team.

Wednesday 9th May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)

Today I plan to choose my final design idea which i will actually film and plan it in detail

We presented all our design ideas to eachother today by explaning each one in detail and reviewing how each one would be feasable. After evaluating each design idea i have decided on having the non smoking video. It is something i care about a lot and i have many ideas for it. All the actors that would need to be included are available and i believe it's a challenge to do as it's stop motion but this will be good because i don't want to go for somehting too easy (SM1)(SM4) . The stop motion will enable me to make inanimate objects appear as if they're moving by itself which will make the film more mysterious and interesting. The only things i will need to buy for it are fake cigarettes and maybe a few real ones. I would however need to make sure all actors are comfortable with the idea.

I have done various research, by searching facts and figures about the dangers of smoking from this website: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/smokehealth.htm. I have sorted out every scene. To improve characterisation i used a technique called 'Role on the wall' Where a shape of a person is drawn. On the inside are words or sentences to describe the character. The outside space is what other people think about them. I will be taking an active acting role in the piece and i will play the main smoker. I will gather up males and females of my age to feature in my film. Here is the Storyboard, Plan, Mindmap and Role on the Wall.
(IE2)(TW3)
I was the only one who had done any planning, so i shared it with the rest of the group and they did their own plans. I also did another mindmap about what health and safety, actors, editing, location etc i need in each scene. (IE5)(TW5)

(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was being able to use my independance and intiative to create my own plans beforehand.
A skill i have learnt today is how to plan a professional film when taking into account at the health and safety etc (IE5)

Wednesday 16th May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today i plan to put what has been filmed onto computer and edit and review.

In the week, i filmed 'the breakfast scene' in which i eat cigarettes for breakfast puring in nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. This was in pixelation form so i had over 100 pictures. I put these pictures onto imovie and played around with settings and found out how to change the duration of each picture all at one so i put it to 4 miliseconds for each picture. I also found out that on imovie pictures automatically pan from right to left so i had to go onto each picture and change this which did take a while.

I also created some release forms beforehand and have been handing them out to the few actors i've filmed so far (SM5). I considered that if a person is under the age of 16 they the actor would need a parent signature on the actor release form (IE1)(IE3)(IE5) . I handed these out to 2 people so far. These two are actors in my film, because someone dies of smoking every 8 seconds. The actors will be talking for 8 seconds and it will suddenly cut out before they can finish what they've been saying. In order to achieve this i had to get some fake cigarettes, due to health and safety and ethical reasons actual cigarettes would not be used (IE5) . I recently went on holiday in Madrid and found some fake cigarettes in a joke shop there, it contained chalk so when you blew out on it the chalk would come out like smoke. These were very effective in the film but i also hope to put another layer of smoke ontop of the film by green screen.

throughout this module i have supported Kia, Sophie, Sarah and Sian in their films by acting in a short part of it. (TW6)(EP5)(EP6)

(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was my ability to get quite alot of filming done in a shot amount of time. Hopefully this will work in my advantage throughout this module
A weakness of mine was not knowing about imovie. I should've done a quick tutorial on it so i'm more familiar with it and wont have to find things out myself by playing around with the settings.
A skill i have learnt today is a computer skill, the use of software packages to make my film.

Wednesday 23rd May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today i plan to carry on from last wednesday.

I got more 8 second videos and were able to put them onto my film. I also found an effect called 'romantic' i put this on the 8 second videos and it made it look smokey which ties into my film nicely. I also did some of my 'advert' i wanted this scene in my film to be very cheesy and sterotypical of an advert. I wanted it to be a horrible subject but conveyed in a cheesy way. For instance, I used to have perfect teeth, Now they're brown and falling out! As if it's a good thing but it's not.

This Cilit bang advert is what i hope my advert within my film to be like. All cheesy and staged trying to make the product seem amazing when it's probably not.

I carried on editing my film and making sure the timing of the stop motion is right and i was playing around with colours to see how i could make my film look more smokey.

(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was being able to create a template of my advert scene, by researching it properly and knowing what i'm basing it on. It was because of thisi was able to find cheesy, what is called musac (any generic commercially produced music for public establishments such as dentist offices and grocery stores)
A weakness of mine is not being able to get more stop motion video done because i need help with it by taking the pictures of me because otherwise i would have to put it on self timer each time then get into the right position so it wouldn't all be in sync(SM5)
A skill i have learnt today is how to lay out my framing of my video. For my advert video i had to make sure it was infront of a white background so all the attention is on the actor. I had to make sure there was enough white in the shot.

Wednesday 30th May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)

Today i plan to edit and review my filming and take an advanced editing skills class with Mr Bachelor.

I was able to film more of my stop motion in the week 'the bathroom's scene where i brush my teeth with cigarettes then i think about people dying every 8 seconds from smoking. This is where the 8 second videos fit in. By doing this top motion it meant it could start piecing my films together in chronological order.

Antony Bachelor worked with me and suggested for my 8 second video i could have a quick onomatopoeia to show their dying so it's more obvious for the audience. He told me that people may not understand the metaphor so i will need to put in my film that people die every 8 seconds. I put this in when i before i think about the 8 second videos. It will be in writing at the bottom. I also have sounds at the end of each 8 second clip called 'Crashing metal' this creates a quick sounds to symbolise death i also have a 1 milisecond image of a tombstone i filmed earlier on. This tombstone also features at the end when i say 'I died of smoking' it is a shot of a tombstone zooming in.

He also suggested i could green screen a clock into my video to show the 8 seconds. We tried this and it worked but i was unable to move the clock where i wanted it to go so it was stuck in the middle of the video and i wanted i small in the corner. So unfortunately i had to cut it but i did use it on the very last shot of the tombstone. (CT3)(CT4)(CT5)(CT6)(RL4)(SM6)(EP1)

(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was being able to take constructive critisism professionally and able to overcome problems. (IE1)(IE3)
A weakness of mine todaywas spending alot of time filming the clock when it didn't even work how i planned in the end.
I have learnt a valuable editing skill because it makes my film now look alot more professional and believable.

Wednesday 7th July
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)

Today i plan to mostly finish my whole film
In the week i filmed some smoke from insence and from a cigarette infront of a green lid of a biscuit box. I hope to green screen this ontop of my film, i also filmed a cigarette burning out for the opening of my film.

Once i put this green screen onto my video i noticed a white spot in the centre. Unfortunately this happened because of the deformity in the lid. In the centre it was white on the lid like on all lids of that kind. (IE1)(CT6) However, i will have to overcome this because we don't own a green screen and it would be unsuitablealth, safety and school rules to burn a cigarette at school (IE3) . it still worked though because it meant i was able to make my film look more smokey.(CT5)

I also had my opening scene filmed where i am getting out of bed, i used a series of camera tricks to make the cigarette look like it was floating, bed covers look like they were moving and make my slippers look like they were floating. I learnt these of various videos i researched off the internet and it looks very effective and gives it a 'magical' sense.
After today, everything was filmed and everything was finished all i had to do was some voiceovers for the 'advert'

(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was my ability to compromise. I found a green lid instead of finding a green screen. I took advantage of the resources i already had.
A weakness was not reviewing the filming for the green screen to make sure there was no abnormalness.
A skill i have learnt today is how to use the camera to create unusual scenes that are a trick to the audience and make them wonder how it was done.

Wednesday 7th July
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)

Today i plan to finish my film.

I put the voiceovers of me saying lines like 'Containing over 400 toxic substances' etc.. However, because i don't have professional recording equipment it didn't sounf as clear as i would want it too so unfortunately, i had to change my idea and just ahve what i was saying in my voiceovers written on the clip. (IE1)(CT5)(CT6)

My film is finished now. I cut out some unneccessary bits where actors were laughing in the shot or where there were uneeded clips. I got it down to 6 minutes which is perfect. I have all my consent forms back. The music i've used is called Teardrop - Massive Attack. This is copyrighted and if i were making this film for profit i would need to contact the company to ask if i could use it and i may have to pay for the rites (IE3) . Mr Bachelor did show us a royalty free music site. Click here to see the website. I looked through the music on this website but didn't find anything suitable. I went onto Yahoo Answers. A site where anyone can ask a question and people from all around the world can answer it. (TW5) I made an account so that i was able to ask a question about my music:

I'm making an anti smoking film, it's a stop motion, it's quite dramatic and i need help with what music i should put it to. Could you please suggest either give me a genre, film, website or mood, etc i should have? (IE1)(CT2)

I got many replies and listened to every music piece that was suggested (IE4)(RL1) but Teardrop - Massive Attack was perfect for what i wanted it was eerie, chilling and epic.

I evaluated my final film. Tweaked and perfected it (IE4) and then exported it. Finished.

(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5) My strength was being able to use my iniative and independace to find a way to ask other people for their suggestions on music i could have.
A weakness of mine was not chekcing if the sound recorder built into the camera was suitable for what i wanted to achieve.
A skill i've learnt today is to akways ask questions to further my learning.

Artefact Module

     Wednesday 13th January
     (STAGE 1 - INTRODUCTION)

Today we planned on going to the Ashcroft Arts centre but unfortunately the snow got in the way of things so it was cancelled. Instead we talked about Workshop Safety for when we start creating our Artefacts. Our Artefact Module is to make a physical object that exists in both time and space.

After Lunch we went to Sarisbury Junior School to talk to our client Mrs Harrington and some pupils.
We were given some ideas of what they would like us to create for them:

  • A mosiac of their School logo (Click to see the logo) to go up in Reception so people can see it as they walk into the school. We though of materials we could use. We thought maybe beads or little squares of acryllic.
  • They also wanted a Treasure Chest used for School Plays, they wouldn't want anything to be in it but they want it to be very eye catching on the outside with Jewels and they want to have a lock on it. Much like the sorts of antique Treasure Chests you would see in films.
  • The last and probably hardest thing to create is a Solar System Model otherwise known as orreries. With the Sun in the middle and planets spinning around it. We thought it could have wood to attach the planets to the sun. This will will used for teachers to teach the students how the planets orbit.
     Wednesday 20th January
     (STAGE 2 - PREPARATION)

Today i hope to achieve getting our design ideas completed and deciding on a final idea.
I also hope to be able together what materials we will need to get in order to make our mosaic.

We got put into groups, i have been put with Sarah, Kia and Sophie White. We have been given the task of making the Mosaic of the Sarisbury Junior School Logo. We all first made a mind map of our design ideas, and tried to decide what materials we would use for each thing.   We had to ask which material would be suitable and which would be safer and more cost efficient (IE1)(CT1). I found a very useful website which has Mosaic Frequently Asked Questions, click here to see the website. We researched on the internet how we could make it and looked at design ideas off the internet (IE2).
We thought of having a glass casing so that the Mosaic wouldn't get ruined and bits wouldn't fall off. However, then we thought that because it's being put in reception where people walk in and out of all the time that it's a very easy place to get smashed so we decided against this (IE3)(CT5).
We came up with a lot of design ideas, and mixed them all together to get our final idea(CT3). Most of the ideas were maybe being a little too ambitious (EP1)
Click Here for Sarah's Idea.
We have been looking for materials and our final decision is to use beads, pebbles and crockery in the form our the logo. We came up this design idea from us all doing individual ideas and incorporating them all together (CT3). We looked up how we would stick this all together are we looked up different types of glues. There was PVA but this wouldn't be very strong if people are going to be touching it, we also thought of using a glue gun, but again it would only glue one side, the underside, so it wouldn't stick very well. In the end we found some grout we could use which would cover three sides. We decided this would be best for our idea(IE2)(IE6)(CT1)(TW2)(EP1). To get to our final decision the whole group contributed to a mind map.

<- We split our mind map into 3 sections:

  • Colours
  • Wooden mount
  • Design
For the colours we decided to stick to the School colours of red and green. However, we will ask out client next week on her opinion. We definitely wanted the colours to be bright and eye catching though, so that people can get a feel of the school mood as soon as they walk in.

If you click on the image then you will be able to see all our ideas organised into a mindmap.

We looked on the internet at different shops where we could get these materials and we found that there is a bead shop in Southampton, or we have Hobby craft. On ebay though, you can buy 500 pebbles for £4.95! (IE2) We thought this was the best option to go for, so we would get the pebbles off of Ebay and we now have to find a place to get the beads.

We also want a wooden mount that the mosaic will go on, this will be a wooden square that will will attach the mosaic too so that is is removable. We are also going to put a plaque at the bottom stating our schools name. As the client said she wanted our school to be incorporated into it to show the community. We will have to go into the workshop to see which types of wood would be the best to use, and we will cut it a metre by a metre.

(RL5)My Strength today was my ability to get things organised and start writing on a mindmap which i got everyone involved with (EP5). I got everyone to draw a design idea aswlel menaing that we had plenty of ideas to take bits from and we have a rough outline of the materials we needed.
A wekaness and something that needs to be improved on are my ideas. I couldn't really get my idea across in a picture because i couldn't think of what we could do. So, for the future i need to make sure i am more imaginative with my design ideas and think hard about what materials can be used and what the piece can look like.
A skill i have learnt is how to carry out independent research to get results and to find out exactly what I wanted to know without needing any help.

     Tuesday 26th January
     (STAGE 3 - INVESTIGATION)

Steve Glynn created this 3D, 2kg fish mosaic in 2005 called 'John Dory'. Glass has been one of his favourite materials to work with, as it reflects a light and catches the eye. It’s function and purpose was to inspire others to stand out in the contemporary art business.

It took a dedicated year and a half to finish. Unfortunatley, it is not known how he particularly made this creation but Click Here to see the process Glynn used to create a different mosaic sculpture which he made in the same way of using papier mache on a curve armature. Then being painted white to cover the newspaper. For strengthening the papier mache, the whole thing would be covered in Mod Roc. Ceramic, mirrored tiles, stained glass and broken pottery were the materials used to the actual mosaic pieces. His materials ranged from cheap to expensive. The technology that helped him through the process was a furnace and a laser to cut the glass precisely, without this he could not have finished it with such detail.

This is possibly one of the most famous mosaic images made. It’s called Jesus Christ, Christ Pantokrator, It is unknown to everyone who it was created by. The original image was created in the 4th Century BC. Its function and purpose is to have an image that shows faith, dedication and worship towards God.

It was created by wax encaustic. This is where the artist mixes wax with pigment to attach the colour to the support. The use of undiluted pigments can cause bright and brilliant colours and the translucence of the wax can add a mystical quality to the work. The medium was originally used by the Greeks who brought the method to the Roman empire. Unfortunately it became a lost art, but was revived in the 18th Century.

This is a Mosaic of Berenice the second, She was the Queen and wife of Ptolemy the Third. This particular mosaic was created in 3rd century BC, the signature on it read that it was made by Sophilos who was a greek artist. It was created by Opus Vermecullatum which is the process where the outline of the shapes are drawn by Tessera which is a small cube of a mosaic piece. They did one of more rows of this and it designed to contrast with the dark background so they make it light or off-set. The most common use for this process was for the roman designers who wanted to make the foreground stand out, it was commonly used on  the head of a figure. The process spread around the world and was commonly used by the Egyptians for decorations on their tomb, today we use this process of having small cube shapes for mosaics. The purpose of this was to honour the Queen, it can now be found in 'The Greco-roman Museum'.

This is a 3D mosaic created by Sally Kendal in 2006. It is named 'Mirror Manneqiun' and it is made purely owith mirror. The purpose of her mosaics are to:
  • Teach an educational art form accessible to all levels of ability.
  • Improve the quality of community spaces.
  • Create art work which affects people's behaviour and attitude toward their enviroment.
  • Raise and promote awareness, participation and ownership of an urban enviroment.
  • Give a sense of history and empowerment
  • Develop interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Produce excellent results which are not only dazzling to the eye but also extremely durable.
The process she used to make this was getting a life size mannewuin as seen in shops and to use mosaic nippers, cutting trays and brushes to cut the mirror pieces and paint them the appropriate colours and she used the nippers to place them inot the grout precisely.

Islamic mosaics were started in the 8th century. They were made with stone, glass and ceramic. Their purpose being to create a geometric and mathematical motif. The process is called zillig where all the individual pieces called furmah are carefully cut from highly glazed tiles. To build up the pattern, thousands of furmah are laid face down on a floor. It has to be precise as the point is that they tesselate. A concrete mix is poured over the back of the furmah creaing a slab. To ensure tesselation it was done by hand. They had no technology in this era so, their only means of cretaing was by hand. In this day and age with our deeloping technologies, machines would be created to lay down the concrete, cut and tesselate for us

     Wednesday 27th January
     (STAGE 4 - PRESENTATION)

Today i hope to carry out a risk assessment and safety lesson to carry out each rule to do with the power tools. We will also go to Sarisbury School to show our client the ideas.

We were all meeting our client today at Sarisbury Junior School after lunch so all day we've been working hard on making a prototype/sample of our mosaic to show her. We got 13 pieces of paper and stuck them together to create a to scale size of our mosaic and started to draw out how it would look. Sophie got up a scale image of the Sarisbury logo and projected it onto a wall then we traced this onto our paper. We all helped to do this. Sarah began to draw where the black pebbles for the writing would go and Kia did the same. Sophie and I coloured in the rest.
As we were starting using the workshop tools today we needed to be aware of and follow safe working practises carefully and efficiently. There are certain rules we had to follow:
  • Tie our hair back when working with the power tools to make sure it doesn't get caught in a machine.
  • Wear and apron to make sure our clothes don't get ruined
  • Have an adult in the room when we're using the power tools incase theres a problem
  • With the Scroll Saw we must make sure the uard is infront of the blade
  • Always wear goggles to make sure our eyes aren't damaged
  • Keep hands well away from the sander and saw
After 3 hours, we went to the tech room and found a bit of scrap wood, Sarah, Sophie and Kia began picking out pieces of acryllic and they would pass them to me and I cut jagged pieces out of them on the scroll saw and then they would place them on the wood to create the mosaic. Mr Coulson cut out an 'S' a 'c' a 'h' and an 'o' to show what the letters would look like with the mosaic pieces. Sophie began to stick all these pieces down with a hot glue gun. Then i had a go aswell.

Our preparation wasn't very good today when making prototypes and drawing our ideas because we wasted a lot of time talking about what we were going to do rather than doing it. We also had very contrasting ideas with Mr Coulson, so we wasted time talking with him and us both getting our ideas across. This is a lesson I have learnt for the future when i have a deadline to meet. We over came our problems however and got everything done in the deadline. (SM5)(EP6)(CT5)(RL4)(RL5).

We went to Sarisbury Junior School with all our ideas and presented them to Mrs Harrington. When we showed ours she was very impressed but asked if the mosaic could just be a block colour and only a mosaic border. Our group smiled and said of course we could. When we got back to school we discussed it and realised that it's not really a mosaic anymore if we don't have a mosaic background, it's more of a 3D collage or picture. Nevertheless, this is our clients choice so we have to make what she wants not what we do.  (EP6)(TW2)(TW4)(RL4)(CT6)(CT5)(CT3).

(RL5)Today a strength was the organisation skills, i volunteered to cut out the acryllic fro our protype instead of wasting time by doing the saem as three other people. This meant we got things done quicker than inteded so we were ahead of time.
A weakness and a definate target for improvement is to reach agreements quicker and not keep discussing because it means we keep disagreeing with each other.
A skill i have learnt is my knowledge of safety in the workshop and what certain things can prevent. I have also become more confident in public speaking and answering questions and presenting an idea to a client.

     Wednesday 3rd February
     (STAGE 5 - DEVELOPING IDEAS)

Our plan for today is to hopefully cut out a wooden mount from a metre by metre square of MDF. We also need to organise a plan for the next few weeks with a week to week plan of every wednesday. We hope to follow this plan.

Within the last week we have been gathering and ordering materials we need to use for our mosaic. Sarah and I went out to get some beads and cloth for out piece (TW1). We went to Hobby Craft and got 440 black beads beads in a pack which we will use for the writing on our mosaic. We also got 30cm square of black cloth. We later realised we didn't need black cloth, we needed white (IE4)(RL3).

Today, we got the materials together. We talked with Mr Coulson and listened to his ideas on our plan and he gave some constructive criticism for us to improve. we took these comments into consideration and changed some of our ideas but were also independent and kept our original ideas (CT3)(RL4)(TW2)(TW4) (EP1)(EP6).

We decided on having MDF as our wooden mount because it has a smooth texture and is relatively inexpensive, readily available, environmentally friendly(IE5)and is available in big flat sheet boards which most woods aren't. We got our wood cut into 1m by 1m. As we were inexperianced on the more advanced tools we were inable to cut the wood ourselves but we told Mr Bowler and Mr Coulson what we wanted and they cut it for us.

Sophie got the sarisbury logo projected onto a board, we then put the wood up to the projector and drew the outline of the logo so it was to scale. I cut out the ships sails from a hankercheif we had at my house (obviously washed!). and placed them onto our drawing. The whole group helped to put beads onto the wood.

None of these things have been sticked down though we just wanted a general idea of what it would look like. Sophie had gone out and collected some beach pebbles to use as a castle on our mosaic. So she put those on the castle. We then had to change our idea because we realised that it we were having wooden frame to hold the perspex in then it would limit the view if you were looking at the mosaic from a side view. So we moved the design in more so there was a bigger border (RL3)(CT6)(CT5).

Our plan for the next few weeks until the deadline are as follows(SM2)(SM3)(EP3)(RL2):

  • 10th February - Paint the board red with paint we will get  from B&Q. The picture to the left is the paint we need. We will be at a workshop at Portchester School for most of the day so we will only be able to paint our board
  • 23rd February - Cut the letters from the acrylic with the lazer cutter.
  • 3rd March - We will be at a workshop at Portchester School for most of the day so we will only be able to paint cut out the letters.
  • 10th March - Cut out the images on the logo such as the sun, cut and stick down the ship. Stick on the black beads Sarah and I purchased and the pebbles from ebay with a hot glue gun supplied by Brookfield.Create the wooden frame from MDF wood and the clear perspex to act as the mosaic protector to ensure no damage to the mosaic meaning it can last longer.
  • 17th March - We will also cut the mosaic pieces out of white acryllic on the scroll saw to ensure smooth and precise edges. We will be at a workshop at Fareham college  for most of the day so we will only be able to cut the mosaic pieces.
  • 23rd March (After School) Sand off any uneven edges of the wooden border with the electric sander first then sand paper and Varnish the border to make it look proffesional and appealing to the eye.
  • 24th March - Create the roof tiles of the church and stick them on. Finish off any more small imperfections. Hand over our work to Sarisbury Junior School.

(RL5)A strength of mine today was that I carried out my own research at home meaning i could go to HobbyCraft in my own time and invite Sarah for second opinions. This means that instead of wasting time looking for materials we can now be actually doing practical today.
A weakness and target for improvement is that we should have been quicker on laying all the materials in place on the board because we kept changing our ideas so it meant nothing got stuck down today. Although this was good because it meant we got our final design idea we still didn't get to stick anything down so we would have to lay it out again next lesson as well.
A skill i have learn today is to be creative with ideas to make it easier to carry out a task. Like having a projector with an image of the school logo so we can easily put it onto our wood. This meant that the image on our mosaic would be exactly right and the scale would be correct.

     Wednesday 10th February
(STAGE 6 - PLANNING COMPLETION OF YOUR VISUAL ARTS PIECE)

In the morning we quickly went around B&Q so we could all get a few bits we weren't able to get at the weekend. The four of us went down the paint aisle looking for the appropriate paint, we compared prices and sizes to see which was a better value for money.

Our pan for today is to paint the wood with the red paint we have bought today, and for most of the day we will be in a workshop.
After, we worked with Portchester school who are also doing the diploma course and we did a workshop. A woman called Tina worked at Guildford School of Acting came to show us about how a scene can be created with lighting, sound and props. She made us realise how important the set is for a performance. We did an exercise where we were put into groups and we had to create two completely different scenes just by using props, costume, sound and lighting and we needed people in the set but they weren't acting it had to be a still image. We all had to guess what the scene was and it just showed how recognisable a piece of music could be. for example, we had 'Mad World' by Michael Andrews Feat. Gary Jules which is a sad song and we had a couple sat at a table with a champagne glass tipped on it's side and a bouquet of flowers on the floor. The couple just sat there not doing anything yet it still created a scene which interpreted to the audience that they had broken up.
Tina then talked to us about how set designers and stage managers do their job, she taught us about how the set would be made in 1:25 scale so that they could see how everything looks and draft it all out without using too many materials. She showed us how this would be done and had brought one with her with she had made for a previous performance she was involved in.

Once we got back to the school Sarah and I painted our wood base of our mosaic 'Scooter Red' we had a problem that the bristles from the paintbrushes we were using were falling into the wet paint and making the texture very lumpy. To overcome this Sarah and I tried to get the hairs out by using a screwdriver so we could scrape them out. But whenever we would paint over the un painted patch we just scratched off more hairs would fall so in the end we decided to do a thick layer of paint over the wood meaning we just painted over hairs. This created a smoother appearence which would be more appealing to the eye (CT5)(CT6)(EP1)

Within that week however, because we had put such a thick layer of paint on the wooden board the paint seem to have shrunk and created a horrible texture which ruined the whole thing. It was annoying but we had to just overcome it (RL3). We decided that when we next paint the other side we will use a non fallout bristle brush to prevent any more bristles faling onto our paint (CT5)(CT6)(RL5)(SM5).

(RL6)A strength of mine today was my ability to overcome a problem we faced within our piece. An alternative way to getting the brush hair out was used. This shows my ability to cope well when something goes wrong
A weakness and target for improvement however, would be to think things through when making a decision like that because by painting such a thick layer the paint deformed. So in the future, i need to research ideas first.
I have learnt about the stage designing. I found out today, a lot of things i have never heard of before. I learnt about the responsibility and jobs of the stage designers and what other roles there are backstage. really, i only know about the performance side of things and i found out about what happens backstage.

     Wednesday 23rd February
(STAGE 7 - COMPLETION OF YOUR VISUAL ARTS FINAL PIECE)

I hope to get all the letters cut out on the lazer cutter today, and because the red board went wrong i will paint an undercoat on it to prepare the wood and prevent that from happening again.
Today we just laid out everything onto our board again and also measured all the letters so we have an accurate scale to program these into the laser cutter to give the acryllic a cleaner cut. Sarah and I went over to the lazer cutte to put all the piece of black acryllic in to cut out the letters with holes big enough for beads. We decided to have the pebbles for the large writing at the top reading 'SARISBURY' and acrylic letters with holes in to place beads in for the rest of the smaller writing to give it more range texture.

We had to prepare the wood for red paint so i painted it with an undercoat from the workshop. This prevents the red paint from seeping into the wood and ruining it.

     Wednesday 3rd March

We headed upto Portchester School in the morning for a 'Paper Birds' Workshop which is linked to the show we're seeing tonight at the Ashcroft. The set designer of the show was running the workshop and we all had to tell her one thing we knew about set design. I said that they use foam board with small models of each thing so they can see what the stage will look like. I found this out from the other workshop we had at Portchester. She then explained to us how the set was designed for the show we'll be seeing, it is based around a world in a suitcase. Where you would open one suitcase and a bed would come out or anything could come out really to show where the person is.

We did an excersise where we had to come up with 6 different suitcases we had to make sure we got across an emotion, location and character. This workshop was very complex and long winded. It mad a very good point and was interesting but could have been made a lot shorter with the same effect we got. If we were to do this excersise again i think my group of Sophie White, Sarah and I we could have taken the excersise a bit more seriously (especially Sarah and I) because we were getting a little bit impatient and just rushing our ideas (RL5). I explained everything we had drawn and explained why we did it and why it should be used in a show (TW5)(EP2).
After the workshop we went to the 'Ashcroft Arts Centre' to see the show we did a workshop on it was called 'A Thousand Pieces'. The play was very deep and intense, maybe a little too intense but it was very well put together and had every element of acting skill to make it good but i think the subject of sex trafficking was a bit too intense.

(RL5)A strength of mine today was that I had the confidence to be confident and be the talker in my grouop in the workshop. I took on the job and presented our work to the class because Sophie and Sarah didn't feel comfortable doing it.
A weakness and target for improvement is too take the workshops more seirously though, because yes it may have been a little too long winded but everything being shown to us is important and being shown for us for a reason.
I have learnt how to use the lazer cutter and know no how we would be able to program it myself in the future.

     Wednesday 10th March

With our all day practical today we hope to get everything we can done. Because, next week  We had an all day practical today which we needed because we haven't had time with all our workshops we've been on. I assigned everyone a role because otherwise we'd be even more behind (TW3)(SM3)(TW5)(EP3) so i told Sophie to cut out the sun for our mosaic with the yellow acrylic. Sarah and I put the pebbles on the wording and Kia stuck on the pebbles for the castle and the boat.
Because we repainted the board we had to draw the outline of the logo again as an outline. before we did anything. So we put the board upto the projector again and traced the logo onto it. After spending so much time in the initial stages of which glue to use we decided to use hot glue gun. We pondered on whether to use pritt stick,PVA or even Grout. But as we researched we found that the hot glue gun was readily available and perfect for the materials we were using (EP1)(CT5).
Before Kia stuck on the boat I had to sand it down with an electric sander, I had never done with before so I was really scared but it meant it was a lot quicker then manually sanding.
All this work which seems like it's not a lot took the whole day so after Sophie had to go home. Me, Kia and Sarah stayed behind afterschool to finish the last bits we had started.

The only problem we occured today was that we had 'Mock Interviews' today which meant we were all in heels and skirts! To overcome this we wore flat shoes and aprons when working with the glue and paint, it wasn't ideal but we had to overcome the problem and it was a safety precaution. (IE1)(CT6)(EP1(SM5)(TW3).

(RL5)A strength of mine today was my confidence with the power tools. When no one else wanted to use the electric sander and said i would do it because it was neeed for our piece or else the border of the mosaic wouldn't have a prefect finish making it look professional.
A weakness and target fro improvement is the restrictions we had with our clothing. Although it wasn't my fault i could have bought a change fo clothes more suitable for the workshop meaning i wouldn't be worryingabout getting my clothes dirty.
i have learnt how to use the electric sander and the different settings you can use. Such as the different roughness of the sand paper attached to the tool.

     Wednesday 17th March
The only problem with the glue gun is that it leaves stringy glue everywhere which takes a while to get off, so to overcome this we had to take all the letters of today and redo them and making sure that we glue from the bottom so that there wasn't any glue strings, so Sarah and Kia put the beads into the holes the lazer cutter made through the letters and put the glue gun to bottom, whilst I was took the original letters off and took the beads out(EP1)(IE3)RL3).

We went to Fareham college in the afternoon to do a Spike Theatre Company. we had to create our own play showing our purpose, target audience, stage layout, props etc.. this was good because it allowed us to work in a team. The man who was running it was treating us as if we were in a real life situation trying to sell our show so he was very strict and grilled us so we had an understanding on how the real world works and so we can get used to working, talking and presenting in the real world. We could also ask him questions about his show we saw at the Ashcroft Arts centre called 'Ontop of the World' that he starred in(CT2).

Kia, Sarah and I stayed after school again and started to cut the border of the mosaic out, i measured 1cm in from the border and the writing and measured out where the mosaic pieces had to go. Sarah drew the mosaic shapes on each piece of acrylic and cut them out and and we both laid them out on the board. This took about 2 hours to do because it was so complicated. Once we had done half, Kia and I put the pieces into their place and we pu maskin tape strips over the top to keep them in place. We were all going to come back tommorow to complete it.
(RL5) A strength of mine today was my leadership by taking over doing the mosaic tiles. I recommended Sarah drew the moisaic pieces, Kia cuts the pieces out and I would measure to make sure the sizes are right. This made sure that we all had somehting to do and it would get done quickly and efficeiently. A weakness and target for improvement is to take into consideration what could happen from the decisions we've made. For example, the stringy bits of glue from the glue gun. We had to take them off and stick them on again differently. If we would have realised this earlier this could've been prevented.
I have learnt to taker leadership sometimes when we can't get motivated. This is a good life skill which everyone should know because sometimes a single person does have to take control to get things done.

     Thursday 18th March
Today we came back to do more of the mosaic but it was taking longer than we thought it would and the pieces got scrambled up and we couldn't fit them back together, so after discussing Mr Coulson came up with the idea to just paint the mosaic pieces, Mr coulson helped us to decide this because we required very occasional support and guidance. At first Sarah and I were against it because it looks better with acryllic, but it is just taking too long so we'll have to paint it. Me and Kia started getting the paintbrushes and painting the pieces and it took us about  half an hour to do the whole board which was a big timesaver! (TW1)(SM3)(SM4)(SM6)(SM5)(EP4)(EP6)(EP1)(TW6)(RL1)(RL4)(CT4)(CT6)(IE3)(EP5)

     Wednesday 24th March
In the morning we checked our worked. A few of the beads fell off so we had to stick them back on. Sarah, Kia and I also had to do the roof tiles for the Church. We originally planned for it to be made from small slate tiles which I looked for on ebay and found some which a specifically designed for dolls houses so they're very small but they only came in pack of 500 and we needed 20(IE2)(SM3). To overcome this we used small pieces of thin wood cut into rectangles and overlaid them on top of each other (SM1)(CT6)(CT5). Sarah and I painted the wood rectangles with some brown paint from the workshop and Kia stuck them on with the hot glue gun. We put the perspex screen on to protect it from any damage and we were finally finished! We were able to work consistently within given time constraints and we could now go and show our client our work.

We all got it in the minibus and got all our artefacts in there and went to Sarisbury Junior School and presented our work to our client Mrs Harrington and a class of children ranging from 7 - 11 year olds(RL6). We had a slideshow of a few of the pictures of our process of making it. We let them ask us questions and there were a lot of them to be answered! We took turns to answer them. This helped us gain more confidence much in the same way the Spike Theatre company did, it helped us to answer questions and not be embarrassed or scared to talk to people you don't know. Later in the evening we went to the Aspex Art Gallery to see Brune Parks artefact module which was being held in an exhibit at the Art Gallery.

(RL5)A strength of mine today was being able to get on with the roof tiles and finding an alternative to the roof tiles we couldn't get. It meant we could find a material which was still suitable and could quickly stick them on with a hot glue gun.
A weakness and target for improvement is to try to get Sophie involved with the last piece of work. I could have tried ot motivate her because she was wokring on her process portfolio when she could've been helping us because i think she felt as if she wasn't needed any longer.
i have learnt many skills in this artefact module, including how to use different power tools and how to use them safely and correctly. i have taken in skills on being an Independent Enquirer, a Creative Thinker, a Reflective Learner, a Team Worker, a Self Manager and an Effective Participator.
