(STAGE 1 - IDEAS DEVELOPMENT) (IE2)(CT1)
Design Idea 1 -
(Yoga Video)
Purpose = To encourage teenagers to do calming exercises which tone up the body.
<-My idea is to film yoga classes, teaching people how to do easy everyday yoga moves. Where I will guide people through all the yoga poses.
<- I would do it in landscapes like this, giving a calming affect, yoga is all about relaxing so calming music could be used and the strawberry fields could be used as a relaxing location and the beach near it.
This is a yoga routine performed by McPetruk in 1938 He was the teacher of BKS Iyengar and Sri K. Pattahbi Jois, founder the Astanga style of yoga.
Throughout the video the landscapes would change behind me, i may have to do this through green screen if possible. Or i could get a special program where you can make backgrounds. I would have to research it. I would do it on my own and then people from my diploma group would gradually join in. If possible, people from my school could feature in it as well.
It would bring people together and would be an easy excerisise routine for people to participate in who don't like vigorous, tiring excersising. You could even do it watching TV.
Here are various landscapes that could possibly be used and are available near me...
Design Idea 2
(Stop motion video about stopping smoking)
Purpose = To encourage teenagers to sop smoking by showing the dangers in a metaphorical way.
My second idea is to have a stop motion video about teenagers quitting smoking. It would involve various images of smoking killing or perhaps ripping up cigarettes. it would be done in a creative way with various metaphorical elements. ^ The effects used in this to represent the smoke with cotton wool pads and when he threw up string was used. This is a very creative idea and i would like to use the idea of a floating cigarette aswell to add personification to the piece. To animate and inanimate object.
It would be done by taking a picture then moving whatever is featured in the shot then taking a picture again. It would be taken in my house, maybe in a darkish room because this would be a suitable place to show how smoking affects your lifestyle seen as teenagers spend most of their time in the home. It would be shot maybe in the late afternoon when it starts to get dark to show the groggy, dingy feeling.
A possible idea for this would be having a cigarette getting shorter and shorter because it's being used and having a face aging at the same time to make it metaphorical of smoking making you age badly.
I hope to achieve putting across an improtant message about young teenagers in the school smoking. Showing what it can do to you but putting it across in a interesting and original way.
Design Idea 3 (The Life of a Teenage Boy)
Purpose = for entertainment value and real life documentation
It will be a parody of teenage boys where i will dress up as a boy and carry out the general stereotype of 'nerd'. It will be a day in the life of them and follow their experience in a week with parodied, exxagerated situations. It would be filmed in various locations like in the home, school and park.
It would be in the space of a week like a vlog. The nerd would get into situations where he gets rejected by girls and bullied. it could make people realize how hard a life a 'nerd' goes through. it could possibly teach people that they shouldn't bully people because of the way they look or act. It could be an infromative video that girls can watcht o see how hard a boys life is and for boys to watch to see how some of their bullying can affect people.
Such entertaining scenarios could be:
- Getting rejected by a girl
- Losing their glasses
- In a maths lesson
- Picking out a library book
- Watching a dvd
- What happens when home form school
- Bedtime routine
Design Idea 4 (Personal Vlog)
Purpose = Documentation
A vlog is a personal documentation of a persons life. It is an insight to a day-to-day life. Many people are into the blogging scene and Youtube.com is the main uploading place for them.
It would be filmed in my home, everyday for maybe a few feeks documenting what i did each day. Much like a journal but a visual one.
After doing research, it seems more interesting to actually include things into the vlog instead of just stating what you did that day. So i could bring a camera round with me and film anything and make it humourous. You can't really plan a video like this so everything would have to be lucky.

Evaluation/Feasibility Study:
(IE1)(IE2)(IE3)(IE4)(IE6)(EP2)
I now have to think through my ideas to see how easy it would be to make them, if it will be effective and how reliable it will be. There are various areas I need to consider befoer i make my final decision such as:
Cost - Most of my ideas wouldn't need much purchasing. However, Design idea 2 involves cigarettes which i will have to buy out of my own money and a school budget would not allow this purchase. So for my final design i would have to consider making my own budget.
Time - The time would have to fit into my own schedule with school and afterschool/weekend activities. I would also have to fit in with my parents as if i need to be driven somewhere it'll be them who will drive me there. If there are actors in my video such as Design Idea 1, 2 and 3 i would have to make sure there was time when them and i could get together.
Equipment - I need to make sure that i have all the right equipment for each idea. For example, in Design Idea 1 i would need to make sure i had appropriate clothing and a yoga mat. For Design idea 2 i would need ot make sure i have a computer software that allows me to put pictures together into a film.
Actors - I need to make sure i have a contract form that protects me against any legal issues such as an actor refusing to participate after filming. This would then mean my project wouldn't be able to go on. I also have to male sure the actors in it are up for doing it and they have to be reliable so i know that i can trust them.
Transport/Locations - I would need to make sure that the places i visit are either local or there is a form f transport to get me there whether it's walking, driving, train or bus
Legality - I need to make sure any music i use has to be within the copyright regulation and must have consent forms for each person in my final film.
My own Production skills - From previous diploma module it means that my skills include, design, computer skills and writing skills and personal learning and thinking skills.
Editing software - This will be a major part of design idea 1 and 2 definately as i need the right software to achieve my ideas.. I will need to be able to have a program that alllows green screen videos or allows me to change my background on the software and i will need software that allows me to put pictures together that are howed quick enought o create the film.
Suitability for audience - As the target audience for this piece will be students from ages 11 - 16 i will need to make sure there are certain boundaries with no offensive laguage, behaviur or visual images.
Purpose - For each design idea i will need to consider the purpose throughout the making stages to ensure it is true to it. If it's a entertainment piece then it has to be entertaining not informative. (RL6)

(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today I plan to meet a professional filmmaker from Citieye named Antony Bachelor, he will teach us how to make documentaries.
Today a professional film maker came to meet with us, he works at a company called Citieye, Click Here to go to the website. He taught us about how to create a documentary which is one of the briefs for our record module. He taught us at what angle camera should be at and how to approach a filmed interview. We were put into groups and had to organise time with people to interview, in my group i contacted 3 male tachers and 3 females to ask if they could do our film. From what Mr Bachelor taught us we knew that the interviewee should be facing a window so the light can hit their face and that the background should be interesting. He also told me that the type of film i was doing (stop motion) was actually called pixelation because i'm using people in my stop motion not inanimate objects.
My group of Sophie White, Sarah and I (TW1) created an interview about hair and beauty in school and whether it's over the top and rules are being broken (CT1) . We added numerous cutaways (EP4) which is where when the interviewee is talking there is a clip of somehting relevant to what their saying over the top. I (TW5) created the questions we would ask people, they were questions(IE1)(CT2) such as 'Do you feel 11 year olds in year 7 is too young to be wearing makeup?' and 'Are many rules broken to do with hair and beauty?' We created a series of different questions for different groups of people: Male teachers, Female teachers, Year Team Leaders and Students. (CT3)(TW2)(TW4)(EP5)
(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was my ability to listen and learn from what Mr Bachelor was talking about and being able to put it into action with a successful outcome. A weakness of mine today was not taking into consideration everything he was saying. Some parts i had forgotten to do, like having interviewees at different sides of the shot to look like their talking to eachtoher. A skll i've learnt today is how to create a professional documentary within a team.
Wednesday 9th May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today I plan to choose my final design idea which i will actually film and plan it in detail
We presented all our design ideas to eachother today by explaning each one in detail and reviewing how each one would be feasable. After evaluating each design idea i have decided on having the non smoking video. It is something i care about a lot and i have many ideas for it. All the actors that would need to be included are available and i believe it's a challenge to do as it's stop motion but this will be good because i don't want to go for somehting too easy (SM1)(SM4) . The stop motion will enable me to make inanimate objects appear as if they're moving by itself which will make the film more mysterious and interesting. The only things i will need to buy for it are fake cigarettes and maybe a few real ones. I would however need to make sure all actors are comfortable with the idea.
I have done various research, by searching facts and figures about the dangers of smoking from this website: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/smokehealth.htm. I have sorted out every scene. To improve characterisation i used a technique called 'Role on the wall' Where a shape of a person is drawn. On the inside are words or sentences to describe the character. The outside space is what other people think about them. I will be taking an active acting role in the piece and i will play the main smoker. I will gather up males and females of my age to feature in my film. Here is the Storyboard, Plan, Mindmap and Role on the Wall. (IE2)(TW3)
I was the only one who had done any planning, so i shared it with the rest of the group and they did their own plans. I also did another mindmap about what health and safety, actors, editing, location etc i need in each scene. (IE5)(TW5)
(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was being able to use my independance and intiative to create my own plans beforehand.
A skill i have learnt today is how to plan a professional film when taking into account at the health and safety etc (IE5)
Wednesday 16th May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today i plan to put what has been filmed onto computer and edit and review.
In the week, i filmed 'the breakfast scene' in which i eat cigarettes for breakfast puring in nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. This was in pixelation form so i had over 100 pictures. I put these pictures onto imovie and played around with settings and found out how to change the duration of each picture all at one so i put it to 4 miliseconds for each picture. I also found out that on imovie pictures automatically pan from right to left so i had to go onto each picture and change this which did take a while.
I also created some release forms beforehand and have been handing them out to the few actors i've filmed so far (SM5). I considered that if a person is under the age of 16 they the actor would need a parent signature on the actor release form (IE1)(IE3)(IE5) . I handed these out to 2 people so far. These two are actors in my film, because someone dies of smoking every 8 seconds. The actors will be talking for 8 seconds and it will suddenly cut out before they can finish what they've been saying. In order to achieve this i had to get some fake cigarettes, due to health and safety and ethical reasons actual cigarettes would not be used (IE5) . I recently went on holiday in Madrid and found some fake cigarettes in a joke shop there, it contained chalk so when you blew out on it the chalk would come out like smoke. These were very effective in the film but i also hope to put another layer of smoke ontop of the film by green screen.
throughout this module i have supported Kia, Sophie, Sarah and Sian in their films by acting in a short part of it. (TW6)(EP5)(EP6)
(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was my ability to get quite alot of filming done in a shot amount of time. Hopefully this will work in my advantage throughout this module
A weakness of mine was not knowing about imovie. I should've done a quick tutorial on it so i'm more familiar with it and wont have to find things out myself by playing around with the settings.
A skill i have learnt today is a computer skill, the use of software packages to make my film.
Wednesday 23rd May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today i plan to carry on from last wednesday.
I got more 8 second videos and were able to put them onto my film. I also found an effect called 'romantic' i put this on the 8 second videos and it made it look smokey which ties into my film nicely. I also did some of my 'advert' i wanted this scene in my film to be very cheesy and sterotypical of an advert. I wanted it to be a horrible subject but conveyed in a cheesy way. For instance, I used to have perfect teeth, Now they're brown and falling out! As if it's a good thing but it's not.
This Cilit bang advert is what i hope my advert within my film to be like. All cheesy and staged trying to make the product seem amazing when it's probably not.
I carried on editing my film and making sure the timing of the stop motion is right and i was playing around with colours to see how i could make my film look more smokey.
(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was being able to create a template of my advert scene, by researching it properly and knowing what i'm basing it on. It was because of thisi was able to find cheesy, what is called musac (any generic commercially produced music for public establishments such as dentist offices and grocery stores)
A weakness of mine is not being able to get more stop motion video done because i need help with it by taking the pictures of me because otherwise i would have to put it on self timer each time then get into the right position so it wouldn't all be in sync(SM5)
A skill i have learnt today is how to lay out my framing of my video. For my advert video i had to make sure it was infront of a white background so all the attention is on the actor. I had to make sure there was enough white in the shot.
Wednesday 30th May
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today i plan to edit and review my filming and take an advanced editing skills class with Mr Bachelor.
I was able to film more of my stop motion in the week 'the bathroom's scene where i brush my teeth with cigarettes then i think about people dying every 8 seconds from smoking. This is where the 8 second videos fit in. By doing this top motion it meant it could start piecing my films together in chronological order.
Antony Bachelor worked with me and suggested for my 8 second video i could have a quick onomatopoeia to show their dying so it's more obvious for the audience. He told me that people may not understand the metaphor so i will need to put in my film that people die every 8 seconds. I put this in when i before i think about the 8 second videos. It will be in writing at the bottom. I also have sounds at the end of each 8 second clip called 'Crashing metal' this creates a quick sounds to symbolise death i also have a 1 milisecond image of a tombstone i filmed earlier on. This tombstone also features at the end when i say 'I died of smoking' it is a shot of a tombstone zooming in.
He also suggested i could green screen a clock into my video to show the 8 seconds. We tried this and it worked but i was unable to move the clock where i wanted it to go so it was stuck in the middle of the video and i wanted i small in the corner. So unfortunately i had to cut it but i did use it on the very last shot of the tombstone. (CT3)(CT4)(CT5)(CT6)(RL4)(SM6)(EP1)
(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was being able to take constructive critisism professionally and able to overcome problems. (IE1)(IE3)
A weakness of mine todaywas spending alot of time filming the clock when it didn't even work how i planned in the end.
I have learnt a valuable editing skill because it makes my film now look alot more professional and believable.
Wednesday 7th July
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today i plan to mostly finish my whole film
In the week i filmed some smoke from insence and from a cigarette infront of a green lid of a biscuit box. I hope to green screen this ontop of my film, i also filmed a cigarette burning out for the opening of my film.
Once i put this green screen onto my video i noticed a white spot in the centre. Unfortunately this happened because of the deformity in the lid. In the centre it was white on the lid like on all lids of that kind. (IE1)(CT6) However, i will have to overcome this because we don't own a green screen and it would be unsuitablealth, safety and school rules to burn a cigarette at school (IE3) . it still worked though because it meant i was able to make my film look more smokey.(CT5)
I also had my opening scene filmed where i am getting out of bed, i used a series of camera tricks to make the cigarette look like it was floating, bed covers look like they were moving and make my slippers look like they were floating. I learnt these of various videos i researched off the internet and it looks very effective and gives it a 'magical' sense.
After today, everything was filmed and everything was finished all i had to do was some voiceovers for the 'advert'
(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5)A strength of mine today was my ability to compromise. I found a green lid instead of finding a green screen. I took advantage of the resources i already had.
A weakness was not reviewing the filming for the green screen to make sure there was no abnormalness.
A skill i have learnt today is how to use the camera to create unusual scenes that are a trick to the audience and make them wonder how it was done.
Wednesday 7th July
(STAGE 4 - RECORDING)
Today i plan to finish my film.
I put the voiceovers of me saying lines like 'Containing over 400 toxic substances' etc.. However, because i don't have professional recording equipment it didn't sounf as clear as i would want it too so unfortunately, i had to change my idea and just ahve what i was saying in my voiceovers written on the clip. (IE1)(CT5)(CT6)
My film is finished now. I cut out some unneccessary bits where actors were laughing in the shot or where there were uneeded clips. I got it down to 6 minutes which is perfect. I have all my consent forms back. The music i've used is called Teardrop - Massive Attack. This is copyrighted and if i were making this film for profit i would need to contact the company to ask if i could use it and i may have to pay for the rites (IE3) . Mr Bachelor did show us a royalty free music site. Click here to see the website. I looked through the music on this website but didn't find anything suitable. I went onto Yahoo Answers. A site where anyone can ask a question and people from all around the world can answer it. (TW5) I made an account so that i was able to ask a question about my music:
I'm making an anti smoking film, it's a stop motion, it's quite dramatic and i need help with what music i should put it to. Could you please suggest either give me a genre, film, website or mood, etc i should have? (IE1)(CT2)
I got many replies and listened to every music piece that was suggested (IE4)(RL1) but Teardrop - Massive Attack was perfect for what i wanted it was eerie, chilling and epic.
I evaluated my final film. Tweaked and perfected it (IE4) and then exported it. Finished.
(RL1)(RL2)(RL3)(RL5) My strength was being able to use my iniative and independace to find a way to ask other people for their suggestions on music i could have.
A weakness of mine was not chekcing if the sound recorder built into the camera was suitable for what i wanted to achieve.
A skill i've learnt today is to akways ask questions to further my learning.
